GPS Cruise Along the Willamette River

About forty of us cruised aboard the historical Willamette Queen Sternwheeler on the Willamette River in Salem, Oregon for a unique demonstration of BrailleNote GPS version 3.5.

Sendero Group and HumanWare sponsored the 2 hour cruise. We had a great turnout, with people coming from the Oregon Council off the Blind Convention, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, students from the Oregon School for the Blind, and even a special guest that came all the way from Seattle Washington! This fun event gave us a chance to explain how the BrailleNote GPS works on land as well as on the river. We were able to get information on our speed, our heading direction, and nearby points of interest. Captain Richard also gave us interesting information on the history of the Willamette River and the city of Salem.

“The Willamette Queen was designed as a scaled down likeness of the former Mississippi and Yukon Territory Riverboats with paddles that propel her. Built in Newport, Oregon, in 1990, she has a capacity of 90. The Willamette Queen features a full service bar and a solid oak dance floor which is located on the upper deck in the main dining room."
